The news came out the other day that an updated raspberry pi has been released.
Other than a shiny new box what do we get?
More GPIO. The GPIO header now has 40 pins, while retaining the same pinout for the first 26 pins as the Model B. Nice improvement, It’s hard to have to much I/O
More USB. There are now 4 USB 2.0 ports, compared to 2 on the Model B. again, Nice! The new USB ports don’t protrude past the board so the overall footprint is actually a tiny bit shorter than the old model b… but a pair of USB 3.0 Ports would have been nicer.
Neater form factor. They have aligned the USB connectors with the board edge, and added four squarely-placed mounting holes. I personally love the new mounting holes. I also appreciate the rounded corners on the new model B+.
Micro SD. The old friction-fit SD card socket has been replaced with a much nicer push-push micro SD version. Again… Nice improvement, Probably my favorite of the whole lot of improvements.
Better audio. The audio circuit incorporates a dedicated low-noise power supply and they moved composite video onto the 3.5mm jack,
Lower power consumption. By replacing linear regulators with switching ones they have reduced power consumption by between 0.5W and 1W. I am always interested in power savings.
What I would have liked to see. A faster processor like the AllWinner A20 SoC 1GHz ARM Cortex A7 Dual Core processor found on the pcDuino3. Or a gig of ram again found on the pcDuino3. I do realize that the Raspberry Pi does fill a different role. But a lot of people could benefit from a model that has a faster processor and more memory.
This just in… win a brand new raspberry pi model B+ 512MB here… it’s easy to enter!
